5 Reasons to Build Your Next House Modular

Your Life! Magazine – 5/2005

House About It and From Sandcastles to Dream Houses.

Modular construction is a popular new method of prefabricating a house. One or multiple "boxes are constructed in a factory, transported to the home site and lifted by a crane onto a pre-set foundation. Some of the reasons modular homes have become so popular:

1. They take less time to build, which means you can move into the house more quickly; you will have a shorter period to carry a construction loan and have to endure a shorter stay in a rental or parents spare room.

2. Modulars generally cost less. Because many of the materials are purchased in bulk by the manufacturer, the savings are often passed on to the consumer. Factories are generally in less expensive locations where labor is not as high. Indoor production in a controlled environment and production line efficiencies add to the cost savings.

3. Materials are not compromised by being exposed to the elements - rain, snow, wind and extremes of cold and heat.

4. Houses are very sturdy. In order to travel at high speeds to the site where they will be set and to withstand the rigors of being lifted by a crane, houses are built to a much higher structural rigidity.

5. The warranty is longer on a modular house. Most site builders give homeowners no more than a one year warranty whereas most modular manufacturers give a ten year structural warranty.
